Fort Monmouth Marina - Rules/Tips

Marina Rules

  1. Do not dispose of your trash in the water. There are containers located on Marina property for trash disposal. Due to mandatory recycling programs in New Jersey, containers are appropriately labeled for boaters' ease in the disposing of their trash.
  2. Do not discharge oil or oily waste in the water. We are especially concerned about the quality of our water and require that all boaters comply with this request.
  3. Smoking is prohibited on the dock area or near any containers indicating the presence of fuel or other highly combustible material.
  4. Working on your boat or trailer? Everyone on Marina property is required to use environmentally safe materials in cleaning, maintaining and/or repairing boats and/or trailers. Please dispose of materials carefully.
  5. Access Gate ALL PRIVATE BOAT SLIP PATRONS MUST SECURE THE FACILITY UPON ENTRY AND EXIT WHEN THE FACILITY IS NOT OPERATIONAL.
  6. The Fort Monmouth Marina abides by the installation's Environmental Management System. As a result, it is our policy to prevent pollution as well as to improve our impact upon our natural resources. Please help us to use energy and natural resources with efficiency and conservation in mind.

Operating and Survival Tips

  • Check your fuel level frequently.
  • Do not operate near swimming areas.
  • If swamped or capsized, stay with boat.
  • Observe all speed and no wake signs.
  • Sailboats & rowboats have the right of way.
  • DWI offenders will suffer heavy fines and personal risk.
  • Children under twelve years of age should wear life jackets when on the docks or boat at all times.
  • Always render assistance to other boats in distress.
  • Do not maneuver through heavy wakes in a head-on posture.
  • Always try for a forty-five degree angle to lessen the severity of the encounter.

Navigational Buoys

Navigational buoys, markers and lights come in all shapes, sizes and colors; but if you follow these three basic rules, costal navigation becomes like "connect the dots" -- follow from one buoy to another, and each marker will tell you what to do next.

  • Always follow the numbered sequence of navigational buoys and markers in ascending order (1-2-3) when going into a harbor or up river.
  • RED buoys always have even numbers and GREEN buoys always have odd numbers.
  • Keep the RED cone-shaped buoys (called "nuns") to the RIGHT (starboard) side of your vessel, when RETURNING to land or going up river. Keep the GREEN barrel-shaped buoys (called "cans") to the LEFT (port) side of your vessel when RETURNING to land or going up river. If you are going out to sea or down river, do the reverse.
